MANUAL
QuickSelect Manual
v2.5 / macOS 13 or later
QuickSelect picks the keepers out of a shoot. Drop a folder, look with the arrow keys, SPACE to keep. ESC moves every keeper, together with its RAW, into selected/.
1. Getting started
- The app opens as a dark window that says "Drop a folder here". Drop a folder of photos onto it from the Finder, or press ⌘O to choose one. Dropping a single photo opens the folder it lives in.
- Only the top level of the folder is read. Subfolders are ignored.
- Opening a folder resizes the window to 65 % of the screen. Photos are shown at up to 2400 px on the long side, never upscaled.
- There is no library and no import. The app never connects to the internet.
2. Keys
- ← → or ↑ ↓
- Previous photo, next photo. Stops at the ends (no wrap-around).
- SPACE
- Mark the current photo KEEP. Press again to unmark. The count shows at the bottom right.
- ESC
- Finish: move the keepers into selected/ (next chapter).
- ⌘O
- Choose a folder.
- ⌘Q
- Quit. If you're mid-way, your position is remembered first.
There is nothing to do with the mouse, apart from dropping the folder.
3. RAW and JPEG
- What you see on screen are the JPEG and HEIC files. If the folder has neither and only RAW files, the RAW files are shown directly (any format your Mac can decode).
- When another file shares the current photo's name with a different extension (RAW, XMP), it shows at the bottom left as "+RW2", "+XMP" and so on. Those are the files that move together.
- Extensions treated as partners: RW2, CR2, CR3, CRW, ARW, SR2, SRF, NEF, NRW, RAF, ORF, PEF, SRW, DNG, RWL, 3FR, FFF, IIQ, X3F, MRW, MEF, MOS, ERF, KDC, DCR, GPR, ARI, plus JPG / JPEG / HEIC / HEIF / XMP.
- "Same name" is matched exactly, including case, which is how cameras write them.
4. What ESC does
- A selected/ folder is created inside the folder, and every keeper plus its partner files is moved there (moved, not copied: they leave their original place).
- Photos you didn't keep stay exactly where they were. Nothing is deleted or rewritten.
- The window flashes once, shows "Done! Moved N pairs to selected/" and returns to the "Drop a folder here" screen. If something couldn't be moved, "(M failed)" is added, for example when a file of the same name already exists in selected/.
- With no keepers marked, it says "Nothing selected" and does nothing.
5. DNG conversion
- Only when Adobe DNG Converter (Adobe's free app) is in /Applications, and some of the moved RAW files are not already DNG, does it ask "Convert to DNG?".
- "Convert" runs the files one by one and adds the DNGs to selected/. The original RAW files stay. Progress shows at the bottom left.
- Without Adobe DNG Converter, it never asks.
6. Resuming
- Quit with ⌘Q or open another folder mid-way, and your position and keepers are remembered. Drop the same folder again and it asks whether to resume. "Resume" puts you back where you were; "Start Over" forgets it.
- If the folder's contents (the list of file names) changed since, it starts over without asking.
- The memory lasts until you finish with ESC. After that it's cleared.
7. Troubleshooting
- "No image files" appears — the folder's top level has no JPEG / HEIC / RAW. Drop the folder that holds the photos themselves, not a parent folder.
- The RAW doesn't come along — check for a "+RW2"-style tag at the bottom left. If it isn't there, the names differ or the extension isn't in the list above.
- "(M failed)" appeared — usually a file of the same name already exists in selected/. Check that folder, then pick the remaining photos again.
